I’ve been recuperating after taking part in the wonderful Revelry Theatre’s The Tempest which was a fun night for all involved and raised lots of money for their scholarship fund.

Speaking of indie theatre!

We’re getting closer to the Fringe! (And the anniversary of this newsletter!!) and this year I’d like to share a dedicated guide to the best of the Hollywood Fringe. If you’re participating this year or know someone who is, please fill out this form or share it with someone who is.

• Suburban Black Girl

  Suburban Black Girl has mastered the art of being ‘non-threatening.’ But when the new political regime begins criminalizing “otherness”, will she remain safe in her glass house of assimilation? Or will current events raze that house into shards of nonconformity?

  An entirely improvised play in the style of a Jane Austen novel. With much wit and heart, the cast blends regency-era charm with modern sensibilities to create a delightful love story over the course of two acts!

• A Man of No Importance

  Step into 1960s Dublin, where an amateur theater group and their passionate leader, bus conductor Alfie Byrne, bring Oscar Wilde’s Salome to life against all odds. A heartfelt tale of courage, love, and the transformative power of theatre.

  The story of Fannie and Bertha, the two most successful lady realtors in Kansas, and how they met the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

• White Rabbit Red Rabbit
  May 10 - June 22 | The Fountain Theatre | East Hollywood
  A global sensation by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour explores the restrictions, censorship and denial of individual choice faced under a harsh regime. At each performance, a different actor will step onto the stage and be handed a script they’ve never seen before. No rehearsal, no director, no repeats.

• Superbloom

  A new standup comedy show every Monday in the Vault at 8:30pm bringing you the best standup in LA with a focus on queer comedians.

• A Doll’s House, Part 2
  May 14 - June 8 | Pasadena Playhouse | Pasadena
  Nora’s back—15 years after walking out on her family—ready to confront the fallout of her iconic escape. Bold, satisfying, and packed with razor-sharp twists, Lucas Hnath’s Tony-nominated play dives into the messy reality of what it means to be a woman living on your own terms.

• Love’s End
  May 17 - June 15 | Odyssey Theatre | Sawtelle
  We all know that a love story rarely ends calmly. How do two people part ways? What words do they say to each other? Love’s End is an ending of a story. A story about a couple who try to end and to close their shared story. Using physical movement when words alone do not suffice, this is an intense and raw investigation into the nature and purpose of human relationships.

CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES

• Barbara Hammer Lesbian Experimental Filmmaking Grant
  This grant is awarded to self-identified lesbians for making visionary moving-image art. Work can be experimental animation, experimental documentary, experimental narrative, cross-genre, or solely experimental. The Hammer Grant includes a $5,000 cash grant, and a series of individual studio visits. Apply by July 2nd.

• The Spaghetti Festival 2025
  The Elysian theatre is looking for your unproduced great ideas that you feel can flourish with some encouragement, a scrappy little budget, and a hard deadline. In the course of several months, you will bring that idea to life with a debut on the Elysian stage. Apply by June 1st.

• The Pandemonium Workshop

  Second intensive added due to popular demand! Internationally renowned clown and commedia master Christopher Bayes, is coming to LA to teach a special 6-day immersion workshop.
